These are 3 of Joni’s classes from her Artful Bookshelf Series and she will be re-visiting them June 28th – June 30th with a small class of students. They were originally requested by a group of women from out of town, but they have since been opened to a small number of students outside their group. We have 2 spots left in the Crystal & Canvas “The Beautiful Woman” Book, 2 spots left in the Copper Book Necklace “Looking In”, and 2 spots left in the Tintype 2.0 Book, so be sure to reserve your spot quickly because they are sure to go fast!

We have had a handful of questions about whether or not the Tintype 2.0 Book will be available online and the short answer is “not yet”. The longer answer is that we would love to get it recorded and available, but we don’t have a timeline of when we would be able to get the video recorded and edited. Anyone taking it online would also need to have a variety of supplies on hand to complete the book outside of the classroom (basic metal-working tools, a torch, patina, liver of sulfur, etc) that would increase the cost of taking the class unless you had those supplies readily on hand. But we are hoping to make it available at some point but we don’t have a date of when this will be possible.

We are, however, planning on offering it again as part of our art retreat that we are holding in September so there would be an opportunity to come take it in person without the hassle of buying a ton of extra supplies that you may not use again outside of this class. If that interests you as a possibility, be sure to keep an eye out as we get closer to our art retreat dates (September 17 – 23, 2021).

Crystal & Canvas “The Beautiful Woman” Book

1st in the Artful Bookshelf Series
June 28th, 2021 from 9:30am – 3:30pm — $75
(2 spaces left in class)

The Crystal & Canvas Book is truly unique and celebrates women! The cover of this book is a 6 inch square of beveled glass and the base material is painted canvas, but materials ranging from chiffon, tulle, silk, and natural wool contrast against hammered steel and rust. You will create pockets from cardstock pages and be able to tuck the faux vintage cabinet cards, letters. and photos that you will create in class. Learn how to create dimension with transparencies and TAP paper. Everything is bound together with an easy-to-follow template in an intricate binding system. A center fabric insert will be collaged with a monotone of textiles that highlight the beauty of light and texture, enhanced by Swarovski crystals and pearls that are scattered through the book design. Messages that have been transferred to fabric strips will flow from the center page to give interest for what lies within the pages of this book.

The crystal embellishment on the front cover is included in cost of class, but bring along a rusty key or found object to add a hint of grunge to you book.

This “Beautiful Woman” Book is a tactile experience that will delight the senses as you peel through its layers. Beautiful images set in a warm white background, the coolness of the glass and the loft of the fabrics to the touch, and the aroma of the lavender seeds fill the air as the pages are turned.

Tintype 2.0 Book

14th in the Artful Bookshelf Series
$175
**June 29th, 2021 from 5:00pm – 9:00pm**
**June 30th, 2021 from 9:30am – 6:00pm**

(2 spaces left in class)

This is a complex book, jam-packed with tons of techniques that you will be taught over the course of almost 9 hours (with possibly needing at least another 3 to fully finish independent of class time). Due to the complexity, it will be taught in 4 integrated parts: The Frame, Tintypes, Pages, and Binding.

1. The Frame : This copper book measures in at 3-¾” x 4-½”. You have the choice to transform the cover with either green patinas or flame painting, adding a bit a flair with solder stamping, a selected tintype, and a brass finding. The spine is 2 inches of corrugated metal for both strength and design. The covers are riveted to the spine and the construction of the book is continued with vintage steel piano hinges.

2. Tintypes : Using transfer image designs we created, transform copper sheet metal into faux tintypes that you will have trouble differentiating from the real thing.

3. Pages : Coffee-stained file folders are used to create 11 double-sided pages to form pockets to tuck away mini-books, mini-envelopes, postcards, and faux cabinet card photos. Our line of Artful Illusion rubber stamps will be used to further decorate and embellish the pages along with paper trimmings, ribbons, and trinkets.

4 : Binding : Follow a binding technique engineered by Joni you will use wire and gaffers’ tape to bind the pages to the spine of the book. Wire loops created in this process will hold small letter stamped discs, trinkets, and small shaped tintypes.

The tools you need for this class will be provided in-store. If you are following this class online, you will be provided a completed tool and additional supply list that you will need (beyond what is supplies in the shipped class kit).
